If you sell digital products online, you are probably already familiar with the growing problem of your e-books, etc. being stolen. This is how it works and how you can prevent it.

A visitor to your site buys your product; for example an e-book. Soon after downloading her purchase, she visits a forum and supplies the link to the page containing your download information to all the members. Before you know it, thousands of people are downloading your e-book! These people are stealing from you and you are unaware of your loss!

Many of these would have bought your e-book, so you could have lost hundreds of dollars!

Or take another case. You set up your sales page using PayPal. Now your simple PayPal button script is visible on your sales page if someone bothers to “View Source”. They can see where to download from and bypass the Payment page. Now PayPal will let you encrypt the button so only gobbledygook shows up in the source. But I have found a problem in that you cannot include redirect and thankyou pages inside that script, so you can force people to pay you, but then the supply of their goods is messy and involves email back and forth and so on.

In another case I have seen, the PayPal page was encrypted to prevent access to a download page, but the payment amount could be changed, so an expensive item could be purchased for 1 cent!

Fortunately, there are ways to prevent this download theft. The simplest method which I have come across recently involves using a third party that provides an encrypted script that secures your PayPal or other payment links and download information that you copy onto your website.

All your downloads are managed using a secure and automated process, There is no need to confirm orders and send download links to customers in email manually. On top of this, the system will send you a confirmation email each time a successful buyer downloads your products. This is excellent for your record keeping; you will know how many people actually downloaded your products. Your confirmed customers can download the product within minutes of ordering it! They don’t have to wait for you to send them emails to receive a download link or go to page after page to confirm their order. Just 1 step for them!

1. Prevents download link sharing, as in our forum example referred to earlier. Each download link can have a expiring time limit as well as a maximum number of download attempts. Even if your customer posted their own real download link on a public forum, the link would become useless before real damage is done. If your real customer doesn’t have time to download their product within this time frame then you can easily reset their timer or download count. You can make your security as tight or as loose as you see fit for your customers.

2. Ignores insecure thankyou/download pages: A common form of “hacking” is by simply searching for insecure download pages via popular search engines. The term hacking is used loosely, as there is no skill in searching for insecure download pages, but the effect can still be devastating. You could lose thousands of dollars. Google includes PDF files in its search results.

If your download page or e-book is not secure, then people could be actually READING your e-book without even realising they’re stealing your product. With the download guard in place, even if the whole world knows the URL of your thankyou page, they won’t be able to download your products. The system checks to make sure a successful payment has been made before allowing access to the download area.

Marketing tests and successful business owners tell us time and again that to maximise profits you need to create a loyal customer list. This can be difficult or uneconomical by using customer signup forms as a large percentage of your customers won’t signup. What are your alternatives?

* Keep changing the location of the files every month or so, as part of your website maintenance.

* Keep renaming your download page frequently.

* Provide download from a different domain.

* Use encrypted pages that prevent right clicks and drop-down menus from revealing source code

* Do not link to your download pages from any other page and manually provide the site to your paying customer.

* Keep your download page more than 3 levels down in your web space. (Like domain/directory1/directory2/directory3/file). This may prevent search engines from reaching your files as they mostly scan only 2 levels down.

* Send your e-books with Acrobat pdf

If deciding to use .pdf files, you could make all of your material data image files which are called into the file from a protected web location. I am aware that Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Pro has collaboration features available, which can be used in conjunction with document encryption and password-locked features. Using the collaboration features, you could maintain an access log, sort of like a check-in/check-out process for the file(s). Remember if using any of the “product protectors” available on the market for wrapping the pdf file(s), you are in effect making them non-MAC friendly, as they become .exe files.

Remember you may not prevent theft entirely; you cannot prevent anyone from sending your product to a friend or reselling it on their own site illegally, though most people will not go that far and there are remedies you can take with their web hosting service and legal action.

Many people do anything and everything to get traffic to their website. But what are actually the best ways to get traffic to your website? Well, I decided to narrow it down to two strategies: SEO and PPC. People tend to use one or the other, but throughout this article I want to discuss the benefits of both and why you should use both methods to your advantage.

Lets kick things off with SEO…

When building the pages of your website, you must choose targeted keywords that represents your website’s theme (remember to make sure your keyword appears high on the page, preferably within the first 100 characters—the spiders love it).

Search engine optimization is the way you present those keywords to all the search engines. With seo, you are basically optimizing your pages to make sure that all the search engines know what your pages are about (optimizing your pages also ensures that you will be listed as high as possible on the search results pages for your keywords). Since we want to optimize our pages so that the search engines can find our keywords easier and faster, we must write pages that include the following:

· Keywords in all of the title/meta tags

· Keywords in text links

· Keywords in headlines

· Keywords body text

· Keywords in description

Don’t spend too much time rewriting all of your pages to get everything perfect; just do the basics and let your powerful content take over.

Content and links are the most important factors in SEO.

Content: You are going to need good content along with relevant keywords.Content is, by far, the most important element in search engine optimization. When visitors arrive to a website, they expect to find what ever they are looking for. If you don’t have what they’re looking for, they will quickly press the back button and find answers on another site. With that being said, search engines judge human reaction to your website. They look at how long visitors stay on your site; if they link to your site; and how many pages they go through on your site. If you rely too much only on getting clicks on search engine results pages and not focusing enough on content, you will suffer in the long run.

· Your main goal should be to build quality content that you know your visitors will love. When you have quality content, everything seems to take care of itself:You will have your visitors publish your RSS feed

You will receive plenty of one-way incoming links from people who like your site and decide to link to it (very important)

Once the engines see good human reaction like this, you will rank higher and higher for your keywords (remember, if you want your keywords to show up faster, you must use the right keywords: relevant, low supply, and high demand).

Lets not forget, at the end of the day, the search engines want websites with high quality content that are relevant to the keyword/phrase a person has entered.

There is no need to over analyzing your site to perfection; just make sure you have enough on page hooks so the that the search engines can know what your pages are about.

Links: Your site is only as good as the amount of quality incoming links

Inbound links helps the spiders get to, and crawl, your website. You need quality inbound links… search engines measure the amount of quality links coming into a site over time. If you don’t have a high enough link popularity, the search engines will occasionally drop you. One way to get some quality links is to link exchange with similar themed websites.

While we pay attention to all aspects of SEO, we must not forget what determines the quality of a website. Search engines measure the quality of your pages by human reaction; that is why exchanging links with relevant websites is still important. When you exchange links with another relevant website, the search engines know that someone thought highly enough of your website to request a link exchange. When you link with a site that is related to yours, the search engines give your site more points. Links coming into your site helps give you a high ranking for your keywords at all search engines. This will, in time, increase your page rank—ultimately increasing your traffic.

One way links…

The only two other ways to get links is to either buy them or have people link to your site automatically. Search engines are starting to penalize people who buy links to artificially boost their page rank; so I wouldn’t try this at the moment. Buying links is risky business; doing it might cause your website to get banned from search engines.

The other incoming links you get are when people like your site and automatically one-way link to it. This how you should get most of your incoming links. And this brings us back to high quality content: If people love what you have written (whether it be in a forum, one of your articles, or your website), they will have no problem linking to your site.

Pay-per-click advertising…

The next type of traffic were going to look at is pay-per-click traffic. While search engine optimization is more of a slow and organic process, PPC advertising allows you to receive instant traffic. The only downside to this kind of traffic is that you have to pay for it. So what you want to do is get the best return on investment you possibly can.

If you are going to use pay-per-click advertising please stick with Adwords. Google Adwords is the biggest, and by far the best, PPC service available. Using it, you are able to have scalable results instantly. When you use an Adwords campaign to promote various products and services, you will know what’s working and what’s not working right away. So the goal is to use Google’s Adwords advertising service to test your products and your websites to see what makes you money and what does not.

A novice might think all she has to do is bid on a few keywords to use in her PPC campaign and pay every time someone clicks on her ads that show up under “sponsored links” on the search engine results page for those words. You get great feedback instantly; sounds simple enough, right? But there is so much more to it than that. If you don’t run your Adwords campaigns properly and track your results, you won’t be making money; you will be losing money… fast. So the key here is managing your campaign.

Adwords is kind of difficult to figure out at first; anyone who has ever used it will tell you that. The PPC market is super competitive (and even more so for the niches that generate the most money) and the only way to have success is to…

· Learn how to write relevant ads

· Keep a close eye on your competition

· Do some extensive keyword research

· Learn how to target ads

· Learn how to create adgroups the right way

· Learn how to bid

· Learn how to avoid using overpriced terms

Bonus Tip: Use PPC advertising while you wait for your free trafficThe best way to take advantage of Adwords is to use it while you apply your SEO strategies. Because SEO is organic, it can take a while before you receive free traffic from the search engines. PPC click can bring you traffic in the mean time. When you start receiving loads of free traffic, you can then cut back on your campaign spending. If you use this strategy for all of your websites, you will always have traffic coming into your site.I honestly believe you should use both methods (SEO and PPC advertising) to get traffic to your site. People tend to use one or the other. But why not use both? Instead of waiting months for the free traffic to kick in, you could be getting scalable results using Adwords in the meantime. Just be sure to work within your budget.

Did the word SPAM just fly through your thoughts? It is a common concern among small business owners who are considering whether they should venture into using email as a way of communicating with their clients.

If you are reading this communication, you are probably versed in the basics of standard email tools, such as Outlook or online email. You may even use these tools now to contact customers, on a one on one basis. There are many other tools available, such as auto-responders, which make email communication more versatile.

Email can be an inexpensive and easy tool for connecting with customers. If you take the proper approach bulk emails to customers is not SPAM. A bit of knowledge can help alleviate any fears you may experience, so here are some definitions that pertain to this critical business skill.

You will want to avoid these words so that your emails have a higher chance of arriving to the intended recipient’s inbox. Filters vary in sensitivity with many operating on a point system. You need to realise that use of these words (or overuse) will cause anti-spam filters to mark even legitimate email as SPAM. This means that your email never reaches the intended recipient.

Blacklist - SPAM filters may identify locations on the web that send large amounts of emails. If a source or server is sending SPAM, the location is “blacklisted” – added to a blacklist of unacceptable sources of email. Internet Service Providers use these blacklists as a tool to block SPAM, by preventing email from the listed addresses from getting through. If your address appears on a blacklist, the majority of your email messages will never get through to the recipients.

Whitelist - a list of allowable email addresses, domains or IP addresses. Some ISP’s use whitelists to identify legitimate servers or companies that send bulk emails. Bulk emails are allowed from those identified, as it has been verified that they are sending information only to people who have requested it.

Email software also contains both white and black lists of senders, as an aid for filtering SPAM. Many subscription services request people to add the sender to listing of allowed senders in their email programs, to assure a better chance of delivery.

Auto-responder – A software program that monitors an email address, sending out a preset automatic response upon receipt of an email message. This type of software often has a number of facilities such as sending a sequence of emails, selecting an appropriate response from a variety of email messages, or allowing for subscriptions to be added or removed from a database.

Mail Server - A software program that transfers email from one computer to another computer. The program on your PC “talks” to a mail server that manages a large number of user accounts. It sends and receives your email, passing it across the web.

eZine - an electronic magazine containing information of value to the subscriber.

Subscriber - a person who gives a service permission to send them email.

Double-Opt-In - A subscription method that requires a user who has made a request to become a subscriber, to confirm that they want to receive the information they have requested. This could be by clicking a link in the email or replying to the confirmation request with another email. About 40% of people who subscribe will also follow through and double opt in if asked to do so.

Now let’s get to the nitty gritty of this valuable skill.

Communicating with your customers by email is a skill. Using email allows you to keep in touch with your customers on a regular basis, without breaking the bank. If you use your own software program the actual cost of emailing 5000 people is zero – very cost effective. Even if you use an online service, the cost is just pennies per email.

There are various online bulk email services to help manage your email database. Look for one that allows you to easily track, the effectiveness of your email marketing campaigns. It is a good idea to have some tools and systems set up so you can check on how many people opened, read and acted upon your email. Like any other form of marketing, testing should be done on your email campaigns to see what works and what does not. Then you can do “More of What Works.”

Another option is a bulk email software program. You will want one that manages your email database and has auto-responder capability. Both systems have their own limitations but are far superior then trying to send out bulk email through Outlook.

Before sending email, you need to use a SPAM checker to ensure that the content of your email is not identified as SPAM. If you are using an online service or bulk email software, it should have a built in SPAM checker.

To communicate with your customers by email you need a list of subscribers. To build this list you must request that your customers become subscribers, preferably using a double-opt-in mechanism.

Put a link up on your web site to gather visitors email addresses. If you use an online service email service, this is usually very straightforward. The user will click on the link and fill in the web form, which is submitted to the service, which then responds with a confirmation email. When they confirm this email by clicking on a link, they are added to your database. From there you can send bulk emails with ease.

They are now your subscribers. You will want to send them information on a reasonably regular basis. Now some pointers here - do not only send sales messages. Although a special promotion can provide a “valuable” benefit to the customer by saving them money, it is imperative that you provide information of value that doesn’t require them to make a purchase in order to benefit from it. Give your subscribers beneficial information and they will be keen to receive your email. Send an eZine on a regular basis. If you have valuable content they will be watching their inbox for it’s arrival. Carefully limit the amount of pure sales you do using email marketing.

How often you send email will depend on your clients. About once a fortnight is usually often enough to maintain contact without offending subscribers. You can try it more often and see how many of your subscribers complain and unsubscribe.

Are you a friendly person?

If you answer “yes”, then good for you! If your answer is “no”, then perhaps Internet Marketing isn’t for you.

The point is.. you HAVE to be sociable, approachable and friendly, in order to succeed as an Internet Marketer. Building relationships and following up on them is critical to the promotion of your sales strategies or whatever creative ideas you have. “Guan Xi” is what we call it in Mandarin.

Most of you should know by now that networking is the most important step in growing and promoting your business. No doubt about that. Moreover, it should have been drilled into you that you cannot survive in the Internet Marketing world alone – you need to work together with people in order to progress and succeed.

Ever heard of the phrase “co-opetition” before?

It’s cooperating with your competition, i.e. your fellow Internet Marketers! It’s a strange concept to grasp initially, I know, but that is exactly what needs to be done if you’re thinking of making Internet Marketing your full-time “job”, or rather “project”, since I’m sure you enjoy this whole process, so let’s not dampen spirits by calling it a “job”.

Get in touch and keep in touch with them. It’s invaluable to your online business. Most of the time, if these guys are internet marketers themselves, they’ll be delighted to know you.

Another great way to search for like-minded people is in the Forums. There are many of them to choose from, so you should be able to find one that cover your interest. The procedure here is the same, start adding friends like a maniac!

You can also join some of the Groups; the most popular of them has over 30.000 members.

When you are adding new people, you will notice that some of them have over 10.000 friends, a few got 20.000, and I have even seen one guy with over 41.000 friends in his network.

And here is where it is getting really interesting. You can post bulletins to all your friends. Let’s say that you have 5000 friends in your network. When you send a bulletin with your offer and website link, this bulletin will end up on the page of all your 5000 friends.

This means 5000 backlinks to your webpage, and it’s pure Search Engine Food!!

As you can see, doing this correctly will increase your search engine rankings!

In the end I want to tell you my experience with MySpace.

As I said earlier, using MySpace is time consuming. But, it did not take many days before I saw results.
